BUDAPEST- It’s perhaps one of the world’s most romantic bridges. It’s definitely Budapest’s most iconic bridge. And after two years of extensive renovations, the bridge is back again. The Budapest Chain Bridge, built in 1849 to span the River Danube, is set to reopen on Friday in national fanfare. The bridge is scheduled to reopen at Midday but with a twist.

After years of wear and tear caused by massive traffic, the bridge will be declared a car-free bridge permanently. That means only taxis, buses and cyclists are allowed to use the bridge. All other motorized vehicles will have to consider alternatives by making neighboring bridges their permanent crossings from now on. This will enable pedestrians, who can also use the historic structure, to cross leisurely, while enjoying the views of the cityscape and Danube, which include the adjacent tunnel and the Gresham Palace.

According to a local news source, the two-year long project included repairs to the structure, the full restoration of its majestic lions and repainting over 23,000 square meters of surface. The project was finished 1.5 months ahead of schedule.

With the restoration job now completed, people can use the structure without having to worry about congestion caused by traffic jams that were common on this bridge. Speaking from personal experience, it was not even advised to go through the tunnel and onto the bridge without having to hold one’s breath to keep the fumes out. That will not be a problem as people can breathe easily while enjoying the fruits that Budapest has to offer, including the bridge and its beloved lions- a symbol of Budapest’s unity and pride.
