BHC Pic of the Week Nr. 235 (Tribute to David Backlin)

Also known as Mystery Bridge Nr. 194

Moving on in our tribute series to David Backlin, we head to Jasper, Texas, where we have this photo he took in 2017. It’s that of the Main Street Bridge, a six-span stone arch bridge that spans Sandy Creek near Sandy Creek Park, where a restored covered bridge is located nearby. According to local sources, the bridge has a total span of 145 feet and is ten feet above water.

There’s no information as to the bridge’s construction date, let alone the bridge builder. However, according to one source, FunStuff, the bridge may have been built during the era of the Works Progress Administration under Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1930s, mainly because many of the houses in Jasper were built using the same stone and brick as this bridge. The writers of that page referred to the Junior High School which was built using the Alamo facade during the time of the WPA. Many arch bridges built during the WPA era used brick and/or stone similar to this structure. Therefore, we must assume that this bridge was built during that time, yet more information is needed to support these claims.

If you have any information pertaining to this bridge’s history, feel free to comment below. Your bridge matters and this bridge is highly recommended if you bridgehunt in Texas. 🙂
