On this day 40 years ago, the Humber Bridge in Hull opened to traffic after a grueling eight years of designing and constructing suspension bridge. With a span of 4600 feet, it broke the world record that had been set by the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in New York City (4260 feet) 17 years earlier. It held the title for the world’s longest suspension bridge for another 17 years.
