2 + 2 = 5 means more bridges will collapse — 357 Magnum Archive 2.0

Reality is true even if you don’t want it to be. And it has certain characteristics, which includes the fact that you need to do engineering right. Many of us know about the collapse of the Florida International University (FIU) Pedestrian Bridge on March 15, 2018 that killed six people and injured 10 others. Little do we know is that although the engineering firm held responsible for the faulty design has been banned from taking part in any federally funded projects, the underlying cause of such accidents comes from a lack of math. This guest column shows you why math is the bread and butter of how things are built- and built safely. The article includes many links in connection with the bridge disaster. Enjoy and hope you can learn something from it. 😎🌻📝🧮🌉❤️

  1. Despite the racist political slant of this article, which is obvious from its name “357 Magnum”, the basic facts are true. FIGG Engineering has been disbarred from federally funded projects for 10 years, due to its design miscalculations, and construction oversight failures, in the collapsed FIU Sweetwater bridge. FIGG has also just lost two very large contracts in Texas, and the company may not survive. It also has me worried about a couple of other notable FIGG-designed bridges, such as the newly-opened Cline Avenue Bridge in Indiana.

FIU has just approved plans to build a new bridge, which will be done entirely by the Florida Department of Transportation.

A less biased article about this was published by the American Society of Civil Engineers at https://source.asce.org/fhwa-proposes-10-year-debarment-for-figg-bridge-engineers-2/

  2. The cause of the collapse was not a math mistake. It was a combination of several errors, primarily in this case design assumptions that engineers must make routinely. The other errors, in my opinion, were related to a lack of leadership and caution which allowed a dangerous situation to progress overhead the general public. However, I agree the modern relaxation of standards based on race, gender, social agendas etc. is a disgrace and itself “racist”.
