This month will mark a 10-year anniversary of the Great Flood of 2013 in Germany. Like the previous flood in 2002, this one affected two thirds of the country and for a short time, cut Germany into two with flooded highways and bridges closed. Unlike the flood of 11 years ago, people in the affected regions were more prepared and there was little damage. Jena was one of the hardest hit areas as much of the low-lying areas, especially near the City Center were underwater. It was the worst flooding since 1994. Floodwaters inundated the southern suburbs like here in Burgau. The Old Burgau Bridge, built in 1546 and rebuilt in 2004, was spared the flood damage. Photo was taken from Burgau Park Bridge. Today is the 1st of June and as announced earlier this year, the Bridgehunter's Chronicles will be featuring interviews with the winners of the 2022 Bridgehunter Awards throughout the whole month. We start with the winners in the category Endangered TRUSS- the Kingsweston Bridge in Bristol, England, which not only got the award, but also got financial support and planning by the City of Bristol to (finally) restore the bridge. An interview with Janet Poole: https://bridgehunterschronicles.wordpress.com/2023/06/01/2022-bridgehunter-award-winner-endangered-truss-kingsweston-iron-bridge-in-bristol-england/ https://www.instagram.com/p/Cs6YAFvru6r/ One of the most uppity green-bellied, red-headed woodpeckers I ever photographed. He tried looking away when I was photographing him. 😂 Railroad bridge spanning the Motorway 1 between Lübeck and Timmendorfer Strand. Photo taken in 2013 Since the beginning of May, the BHC has been doing a series commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Great Flood of 1993 and the 15th anniversary of the Great Flood of 2008. Both devastated the Midwest of the USA including MN, IA, the Dakotas, Missouri and areas along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. Apart from the Sutliff Bridge in Iowa, here is one that embodied the song Over the River and Through the Woods to Grandmother's House we go. This bridge had a lot of memories of my childhood and that of my parents and grandparents. It was one that survived many floods except the last one in 1993. Check out the Petersburg Road Bridge and its history here: https://bridgehunterschronicles.wordpress.com/2023/05/28/over-the-river-and-through-the-woods-by-boat/ Oblique view of the Schedewitz Bridge in black and white.
