  1. Clearly, the design criteria here was to maximize clearance for watercraft, while minimizing the cost of the bridge. Other designs to accomplish this are suspension bridges, through-arch bridges, or a simple through-truss bridge which might have worked in this instance. The curved roadway is simply to gain elevation while limiting steepness of the road. A much larger example of a bridge that uses a curve to increase watercraft clearance is the San Diego – Coronado Bridge in California
