Northern Avenue Bridge

This bridge is currently slated for replacement, bit by bit. Located in Boston.

Milford Street

This bridge once connected Boston’s downtown to South Boston and the fishing piers. It is now permanently closed to vehicular traffic and the bridge remains open for boat traffic. The bridge is not sound for cars or foot travel. Other roads will take you the way the Northern Avenue once did.

  1. Outside of the Salt and Pepper Bridge across the Charles River, and an arch bridge in Tyngsborough, the Bay State has done a rather poor job of preserving our iron and steel bridges in recent years. The loss of the Textile Memorial Bridge, and soon the Schell Memorial Bridge, and soon this bridge as well. If history resides outside the revolutionary war period with some black heritage exceptions, it doesn’t seem to hold value in Massachusetts.
